INTRODUCTION

As the overall population of the United States continues to change in its ethnic constitution, I the nation's colleges and universities are challenged to create strategies that enhance access and expand the educational opportunities for an increasingly diverse citizenry.2 The nation's populations have always been, to paraphrase historian Stephanie Grauman Wolf,3 as varied as its lands, yet only in the past three decades-following the tumultuous movement for civil rights-have colleges and universities adopted new approaches that respond to anticipated increases in enrolling diverse populations of students.4
