ABSTRACT

Neurotransmitters are substances that carry messages to or from nerve cells. Among the neurotransmitters especially relevant to the psychiatric aspects of stroke are glutamate (an excitatory amino acid), gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA, an inhibitory amino acid), acetylcholine, the cate-cholamines (norepinephrine, epinephrine, and dopamine), and serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT).
