ABSTRACT

Education is a field like medicine in that its name simultaneously refers to a practice and to a field of disciplined enquiry. In fact, both fields of enquiry have a number of very different sub-fields — there is the history of medicine or education; the area of medical ethics corresponding to one part of the philosophy of education; medical jurisprudence corresponding to the law of education, and so on. The paradigm of research in the area of the philosophy of education, to take one example, is surely the paradigm of philosophical research in any area — and the same for the history of education (or medicine) and for the law of education or medicine.
