ABSTRACT

Mrs. S is a 48-year-old, married, White female who had no physical problems until she was bitten on the left hand by an insect 2 months prior to this evaluation. Her hand and arm became swollen over several days following the insect bite. The swelling receded, but shortly after this, she developed a wide range of physical symptoms including pain in her back, neck, left breast, and eyes; weakness; fatigue; and difficulties with memory. After a thorough work-up found no medical explanation for these problems, her physician requested a psychological evaluation to assess whether psychological factors play a role in her presentation.
