ABSTRACT

Mr. H is a 30-year-old, married, White male. He arranged to meet with a therapist 4 weeks after separating from his wife because of distress about the separation. A psychological evaluation was requested to assist with diagnosis and treatment planning. In particular, the therapist was concerned about reports of intense swings in Mr. H’s mood as he described abrupt shifts from feeling calm to “plunging into depression” and questioned whether his mood swings are symptoms of a bipolar disorder given a positive family history of bipolar disorder.
