Earrings and hair-ornaments

There is no distinction in English terminology between ear-jewels that are suspended from wire hooks and those that take the form of a ring; even ornaments that are clipped on to the earlobe are still popularly referred to as earrings. Roman earrings belong to two main groups, those based on actual rings perforating the earlobe and those which hang freely from a hook.
