ABSTRACT
The mother/authors not only enhanced the role of the dead mother in Victorian novels but enhanced and developed the role of living mother-characters as well. Many Victorian novels contain mothers as characters, because it was probably almost impossible to write a long realistic Victorian novel which did not depict at least one mother. However, the mother/authors seem much more interested than the canonical authors in creating mothers who are speaking subjects, who are the focus of the narrative, and who are either the heroines themselves or share equally with their children in the limelight of the plot.
