ABSTRACT

Making the diagnosis can be difficult in at3φical presentations, such as individuals younger or older than average, and in males.

Children: Anorexia nervosa occurs in children as young as 7 years of age. There is a greater proportion of males in the younger age group (young Male-.Female 1:3 vs adolescent M:F 1:10). Children this age may not be able to articulate the reasons why they have lost weight. The diagnosis can be inferred from their behaviour. Reserves of fat are lower in children, and starvation quickly impairs basic physiological fimction. Peripheral circulatory failure cam lead to ischaemic changes in the toes causing gangrene.
