ABSTRACT

Work with the bored patient is discussed in terms of the centrality of the concrete experiences and expressions of the therapist’s self. The concept to f the self is viewed as the fulcrum for evoking the bored patient to participate more feeling fully in the treatment, in contrast to a more interpretive and theoretical ego oriented approach. Furthermore, in the two cases described, an inadvertent expression of self on the part of the therapist is understood to be a necessary condition for an authentic engagement between patient and therapist to occur
