ABSTRACT

The demonization of the Jews can be illustrated by a certain joke that stems from Czechoslovakia but that could have come from almost any country on earth. It is early morning, the butcher shop is not open yet but a long queue has formed. After some hours a party official shows up: “Any Jews waiting here?… Go on back home!” More time goes by, and the official shows up again: “Any non-party members here?… Go on home!” Then yet more waiting, until finally the official returns and announces: “You all might as well leave—there won’t be any meat today.” At this a voice pipes up: “Wouldn’t you know it? The Jews always get the best deal!”
