ABSTRACT

Many books have been written on the origins of the American civilian space program. Lloyd Berkner’s name invariably is mentioned (if not highlighted) as one of its leading scientist-advocates. Most accounts at least note that he was one of a number of scientists behind the International Geophysical Year (IGY), the international scientific effort to which the Soviet Sputnik and American Vanguard satellite programs were nominally devoted. 1
