ABSTRACT

During the fall of 1955 Lloyd Berkner was elected President of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU), the apex of the entire system of international science. Characteristically, he dedicated his term in office to a thorough reorganization of that body and to providing the entire international union structure with a more solid and reliable financial base. 1 At the same time he continued to lead Associated Universities, Inc.; he remained an officer (now with the rank of Rear Admiral) in the U.S. Naval Reserves; and he continued to work closely with the State Department, the Central Intelligence Agency, and other government bodies concerned with science and the contributions it could make to national security.
