ABSTRACT

It has been found that most people quit smoking in stages or steps. For some people quitting is simply a matter of resolve, for others it takes many attempts and often outside help.

There are generally three types of serious smokers:

1. The first group acknowledges the hazards of smoking, yet continues because of the danger. These smokers mistake their disregard for the risks of smoking for bravado. They derive a distorted sense of excitement from smoking in spite of the admitted danger. They resist treatment. These people may pay lip service to quitting, but only in a casual way.
