ABSTRACT

The processes of grieving in trauma treatment are understated, yet critical. Loss is a very common experience in life and a large component of all trauma. But most times, people do not show the deficits or scars that are internal. These scars represent the loss of or damage to the internal organization that enables people to experience life as human beings: their self-theory (Epstein, 1978). Often, loss is initially thought of in terms of the effects resulting from the death of a valued, internalized other. Yet, there are many other kinds of losses. But always self-theory damage (soul loss) is registered and needs to be addressed in trauma care (Moore, 1994).
