Patterns of Competition in Appalachian Coal Markets

WithRobin C. Landis

This chapter discusses in greater detail the competitive patterns of the markets for Appalachian coal. As discussed in Chapter 2, Appalachian coal sales can be grouped into several broad categories, according to purchaser — electric utility, coke manufacturers, retail (mainly home heating), process steam and other industrial, and exports. This chapter focuses primarily on the electric utility market, because this sector is the largest, fastest growing, and most competitive of the various markets.
