ABSTRACT
The CEGB had a unique advantage in managing the electricity supply emergency caused by the 1984–5 miners’ strike. It came from the development of the techniques normally used for planning the operation of the power system, namely the ability to predict the longer term effects of the changing circumstances with which we were faced. It is difficult to overstate the value of this facility and innovations that improved it as the dispute went on.
