ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by identifying the parts of a badge and how they can each be designed to suit the users’ needs. This analysis includes the badge metadata and completion logic, as well as the more overt components, such as the badge’s visual and reward. The chapter progresses to discuss how individual badges combine to form increasingly complex structures, including metabadges, badging systems, and badging backpacks, such as the Mozilla Backpack. Different types of badges are then described, such as incremental, ranking, and credentialing badges (e.g., Open Badges). Overall, this chapter serves to set the foundation for the rest of the book by explaining common badging terminology and designating the major points of articulation for badging design.
