ABSTRACT

Digital badges fit well within traditional academic structures and can be used to enhance pedagogy when carefully designed. This chapter examines how badges can be used to scaffold instruction, provide feedback, or create opportunities for personalized learning, while considering issues specific to online education, such as the impact of large class sizes on instructor workload. It also details the potential for students to create and issue badges, and how that might be done with thought and care to add a new dimension to the digital classroom. Additionally, this chapter compares two options for instructors: building a custom badging system, or using a pre-existing digital badge creator, such as Credly, Acclaim, or Badgr.
