ABSTRACT

Physical badging, in the forms of ribbons and medals, is quite familiar to most military organizations. Recently, many have turned their efforts to gamification efforts, digital badging included. This chapter identifies how digital badges can be used to complement the more traditional credentials used in the military. It describes how badges can be used for recognizing and credentialing within small, individual units, and proceeds to examine badging design for specific applications, such as training for cybersecurity, combat medic specialization, robotic vehicle operation, marksmanship, and train-the-trainer applications. Finally, the chapter examines specific pitfalls that should be avoided, such as lack of security, overuse of playfulness, and designing without understanding the organization’s traditions and culture.
