ABSTRACT

The supervision needs of advanced professionals are likely to vary depending on the area being supervised, including the provision of supervision itself. School psychologists need to be lifelong learners, and supervision is an essential part of ongoing professional development. Advanced supervisees can work in conjunction with supervisors to identify and access meaningful learning experiences and supplement self-assessment with the insights of others who have observed their work. Supervision for competent school psychologists can address considerations such as navigating transitions, enhancing existing skills, and developing specialized expertise in an area of interest or need for the school or district, as well as focusing on self-care needs such as improving or maintaining work–life balance. Advanced supervisees must be actively engaged in assessing their evolving areas for growth for several reasons. The professional growth plan identifies specific goals in the areas of knowledge, skills, and professional work characteristics and delineates the action steps, required resources, and anticipated timeline for attainment of objectives.
