ABSTRACT

This chapter explains what a supervision plan is and why it can be helpful to use one. If the supervision contract is the most powerful tool for establishing a strong supervision relationship, then the supervision plan is the most powerful tool for keeping it focused and productive. Danny Newman recommends identifying broad goals that are revisited and revised throughout the training experience to reflect the changes in needs and priorities that come with supervisee development. Effective evaluation is based on clear goals paired with regular feedback. Work samples such as reports of psychological or behavioral assessments can also provide insight into a supervisee's level of skill and experience and help set the stage for planning and goal setting. Beginning with assessment eliminates the possibility of over or underestimating a supervisee's level of knowledge or skill, either of which could lead to anxiety, frustration, and other problems.
