ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the importance of providing effective feedback to supervisees and presents some strategies for doing so. School psychologists must have strong communication skills for virtually all aspects of their work. Evaluation involves the process of assessing long-term performance based on set external criteria, while feedback is about giving supervisees information that will help them improve their skills compared to their level of performance. Discussions about feedback and the supervision experience should address factors such as when, how, and how often feedback will be provided, the purpose of providing feedback, and the fact that both supervisor and supervisee will be expected to engage together in the sharing of feedback. Employing a Motivational interviewing-based approach to feedback may be time consuming for both supervisees and supervisors, particularly when sessions need to be recorded, transcribed and reviewed. It's clear that providing quality feedback is an important responsibility for supervisors.
