ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the ways in which online feminism sustains and advances the feminist movement. By situating online feminism in the scholarship about the feminist movement, the chapter shows how online and offline feminism have a symbiotic relationship. Thinking of online and offline feminism separately is neither accurate nor analytically useful, and obscures significant continuity in the movement. The chapter is based on an analysis of college student's feminist mobilization. It demonstrates how online feminism replicates and perpetuates forms of feminism that are familiar from pre-Internet organizing periods. Research and commentary about online feminism points to its meaningful nature for community building, solidarity, and feminist transformation. Drawing on offline feminism research and the interview data, the chapter identifies three primary themes related to the benefits of online feminism. First, the creation and sustenance of feminist solidarity and the dissemination of feminist information; the diversification of media narratives about feminism and women; and finally offline impact.
