ABSTRACT

This chapter defines the learning outcomes/plot lines for teacher unit or course phrased as, Students will understand that. Putting the standards aside for that step may have left teacher uncomfortable, but this chapter will put them front and center. In the coming pages, teacher will embed their standards or other objectives into thier unit, and then align them with activities and assessments. Again, teacher will use the Curriculum Design Template. The chapter discusses standards and other verb-based objectives play a unique role in this design method, which puts the narrative. Thus, rather than being ends in themselves, standards support the plot by defining the assessable behaviors that tell us whether students have mastered them. This approach ensures standards are taught in a meaningful context.
