ABSTRACT

Organized around two categories, structured and unstructured data, this chapter provides an overview of the range of data sources that are created by various e-learning technologies and demonstrates how they can support learning. The structured data include information on various types of student activities in e-learning environments, including login times, submission data, and click behaviors, while unstructured data covers blog posts, discussion board messages, chat transcripts, email messages, and student produced media. The information in the chapter offers educational practitioners and administrators insights into how these data sources can enhance instructional design, teaching, and program evaluation. The appendix summarizes each data source and potential applications.
