ABSTRACT

It’s a truism that you can make a great first impression only once. How to make that great first impression is often a learned process. In the United States, parents are invited to come to their children’s kindergarten classes to talk about their jobs. By first grade, their children participate in “Show and Tell” in class. Here, the children present and talk about an object they brought from home in front of the entire class. Other societies place less emphasis on the individual but nevertheless may have confirmation rituals that their children must undertake in which they present in public.
