ABSTRACT
In a previous chapter, I mentioned the blossoming of creativity in 16th-century Renaissance Florence. In that era, a prevailing culture of support for the arts brought with it an underlying prestige to the wealthy families that supported the activity of budding artists. Members of the bourgeoisie vied with each other to have the latest and finest painter, sculptor, or architect under their patronage.
