ABSTRACT

Counselling for friendships can also be difficult due to the ability of the student to make connections with their peers. For students who have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) this is exceptionally difficult. Watching videos, role modelling, scenario training and drama are very helpful when working with an ASD student. Another point is that for ASD students we must look beyond the age of the student – rather we need to look at the interests shared in common. Counselling for friendships can be frustrating but also very rewarding. Having knowledge of agencies or professionals who provide social skills counselling can assist students outside of the school setting to develop skills to make friends. More importantly the counsellor knew that the Tech teacher was a very good counsellor/mentor for students and as a result of this a discussion was made between the counsellor and Tech teacher about how best to help Daniel.
