ABSTRACT

The potential to make learning real is opened with a few skills and a willingness to experiment. The author's K-12 teaching experience and background as an educator is in visual arts. The visual arts students had a mixed response to the inclusion of virtual worlds in their study programme. During the tutorial, the students were given access to the university's campus on Interaction Island and were asked to explore independently. The space on one of the university's Second Life islands was used as a meeting area in which tutorials were conducted with the students to discuss the concepts of design principles and sustainability. One student created a virtual field trip that explored the Aeonia Art Gallery in Second Life. In the first year, the ITE students enrolled in the geography unit were encouraged to use Second Life to create a digital resource for one of their assignments.
