ABSTRACT

The methodological approach brought together social theory and creative practices to expand the ways of researching digital literacies beyond the typical frameworks of learning sciences and new literacies. While the young people in this study demonstrated an awareness of issues to do with privacy, targeted advertising and technological convergence, and some innovative critical practices, it was telling that they had little or no support for developing these understandings, at school or elsewhere. While any approach is likely to involve a range of practices and approaches, the aim is to distinguish the techniques that are new in this context. Reflecting on the fieldwork people can now consider which aspects of the research provocations were most effective in scaffolding a critical digital disposition. A transcendental perspective enables a different kind of engagement. While technical skills need to be developed in conjunction with the technology in question, when distanced from it a more critical and reflective pattern of thought is able to emerge.
