ABSTRACT

No matter how much one prepares, trainees and qualified practitioners will face situations they were not afforded the luxury of previewing. Many of these situations require a response long before the situation can be discussed with supervisors or peers. While preparing for every possible situation is impossible, developing a decision-making model and practicing the decision-making process can prepare trainees to better handle these potentially stressful situations. Through the presentation of various scenarios, as well as information on how one might come to a decision to proceed, this chapter will help trainees feel better prepared to handle the unexpected.
