ABSTRACT

Before beginning work in applied settings, it is important to unpack one’s own feelings, assumptions, and concerns. Without adequate self-awareness, trainees run the risk of coming to premature, biased conclusions about their clients. Each trainee brings their own unique experiences with them to their work. By developing more self-awareness, trainees can critically examine their beliefs and assumptions, and thus approach their work without preconceived judgment. This chapter aims to help trainees examine their biases and how they can impact a session, and to teach them how to work with clients of differing backgrounds and points of view.
