ABSTRACT

Before beginning work, it is important to learn how to deliberately assess one’s use of theory, knowledge, and skills through narrative reflection. Doing so develops and enhances a trainee's self-awareness and effectiveness; one can identify and overcome blind spots, biases, assumptions, and more through this self-examination. By forming a narrative, the trainee recreates and clarifies meaning within the experience and generates new perspectives. The purpose of this process is to improve future actions and create a framework for understanding and action. This chapter defines narrative reflection, guides readers through it, explores different venues for implementing reflection, and provides meaningful examples.
