ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book suggests that successful language learning is likely to happen when classroom practices are made real and meaningful to learners and when the goal is to teach learners to be able to use the language effectively for their communicative needs. It focuses on the simple model as a guide to inform the planning of learning sequences and lessons, during the early stages of learning to teach. The book deals with the decision making of beginning teachers of modern languages (ML). It provides relatively simple, limited examples and progressively moves to more complex and nuanced planning. The book describes some practical ideas that teachers can plan for early on in the initial teacher education period. It also deals with some final reflections and an annotated list of further reading and sources to further support, and planning for learning in ML.
