ABSTRACT

Lesson planning is a much messier and more complex process than neatly organised formal lesson plans might suggest. Lesson planning is also an individual process. Planning efficiently means making good use of the time available to teachers for planning; planning effectively means planning lessons that lead to learning, specifically the intended learning for that lesson. Lesson planning may be an individual process but it does not need to be a solitary one. Planning for learning is the function of lesson planning. In the early days of lesson planning, the whole idea of planning for learning and the concept of ‘lesson objectives’ can appear very abstract; and this can be an obstacle to lesson planning. The lesson planning process usually results in written plans, at least for beginning teachers. Outline planning can help teachers to order teacher's first thoughts into a coherent format.
