ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the relationship between power and resistance in work and organizations. Adopting a critical perspective, we explore the evolution of power in Fordist and neoliberal capitalism, arguing that it has evolved from coercive, through consensual, to governmental forms of power, each reflecting different strategic mechanisms through which the struggle between capital and labor has dynamically unfolded historically. We end the chapter with a brief case study examining how power as governmentality operates in the public sector.
