ABSTRACT

Coauthors and friends Shawna Malvini Redden and Sarah J. Tracy share their journeys of studying emotion, relationships, and organizational communication and provide key definitions, research findings, and practical implications of four core research areas: (1) commodification and control of emotion at work in the form of emotional labor and related concepts, such as emotive dissonance, emotional taint, emotional deviance, and emotional taxes; (2) stress, burnout, and communicatively restricted organizational stress (CROS); (3) workplace bullying and abusive interaction at work; and (4) prosocial emotional processes at work, such as humor, compassion, resilience, emotional intelligence, and mindfulness. The chapter closes with future research directions and discussion questions.
