ABSTRACT

The municipal school for type-8 special education, Parkschool, in Leuven has a clearly defined aim which is the reintegration of pupils into mainstream education. In Belgium, children with serious learning difficulties attend a special school. Cooperation of the education systems also means that staff members have the opportunity of getting to know each other's working methods and that the school guidance services obtain more correct data, thus enabling them to give the help required. Data resulting from a survey of pupils with serious learning difficulties in the Flemish primary schools show that a large number of pupils are lagging behind at school or have dropped out from the start. Special education got its permanent structure when the 1970 Act was passed. The Act outlined eight types of special education, each of which has its own objectives, contents, methods and organization.
