ABSTRACT

This chapter provides policy recommendations for enhancing the quality of Indonesian local teachers in the era of English as a lingua franca (ELF). First, the chapter argues that it is important to reorientate the overall objectives of English language education in Indonesia. Second, the chapter outlines strategies for empowering teachers and learners as effective ELF users. Third, the chapter highlights the need for a policy on English teacher proficiency. Fourth, the chapter argues for some policy innovations that would improve teacher education for ELF as a sustainable process of teacher professional development. Finally, the chapter presents some concluding remarks.
