ABSTRACT

In national education systems from early childhood education to higher education have increasingly found themselves under intense pressure to reform. Against this background, many countries implementing educational reforms and changes in the education system are making reference to international research findings and trends in order to create a ‘new pedagogy’ that meets the trends. In decades, the field of cultural studies has been developed as a cross-sectional undertaking within social and educational sciences on an international level. The so-called ‘cultural turn’ describes the establishment of interdisciplinary research perspectives and the opening up of a wide range of theoretical references and subject fields. Cultures, migration, society and rules of human cohabitation appear to be developing into the most important challenges facing European community life. Migration movements into European countries are discussed in terms of the changes seen in democratic values and rules, while conflicts in the context of migration are identified as a problem of national affiliation or ethnicity.
