ABSTRACT

The chapter gives an overview of early childhood education and care (ECEC) in Serbia. It explains how ECEC in Serbia (preschool education) is conceptualized and managed, starting from its historical roots, presenting the ECEC in its structure, tackling the issue of curriculum and looking at the ECEC professions in Serbia. The chapter also presents current challenges, developed policies and strategic projections. The aim of the text is to portray the specific and dynamic context of ECEC in Serbia that shapes the foundation on which the development of Serbian preschool education in the 21st century will be further conceptualised and operationalised.
