ABSTRACT

After a historical excursus regarding transference and countertransference, a general schema is presented that represents the therapeutic relationship. This schema facilitates the description of aspects such as: the formation of patient objects and the modality of co-construction of experience; it also highlights the modalities of functioning of the Ego of the therapist, who adequately utilizes countertransference, and of the therapist who, in turn, enacts aspects of transferences with regards to their patient.

The schema also allows the representation of transference as a defensive aspect. At the end of the chapter, there is a presentation of an intense way of using countertransference, known as “quick sharing”.
