ABSTRACT

Judging from social background, the emergence of the problems of the subaltern group in China is the result of increasing social competition and interest differentiation during social transformation. Before the reform and opening up, the average income level of both urban and rural residents in China was relatively low with no big gaps. Many people in the subaltern group are inherently low in physical capital due to physiological factors such as illness, disability and old age and factors of weak learning capability and so on, which result in their low level of competitiveness. The urban subaltern group has not formed for very long during social transformation in China. Therefore, the main body of the subaltern society is still a transitional and special group with a vague identity whose sense of class is not yet stable. The subaltern group is a social group that is severely insufficient in both human capital and social capital.
