ABSTRACT

This chapter offers suggestions of texts which can be used to develop students’ familiarity with literature prior to A level, and considers the types of activities which use their reading as a springboard for students’ own creativity in speech and writing. The picture stories provide a good model for students and older students can also rewrite a modern version of the stories, for example, in Snow White, the mirror on the wall might be a laptop or tablet and the poisoned apple a different fruit. Literature can be used to supplement non-fiction reading by the use of short authentic extracts which can boost students’ confidence and allow them to experience a range of styles and authors. Poetry allows students to experience different figures of speech, the sounds and rhythms of the language, and presents the opportunity of exploring different forms and themes such as love, hate, loss.
