ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests that ways in which teachers may engage student interest in the task and text ahead. It examines ways of engaging students initially with the cultural world of the text through pre-reading, research and presentation tasks in order to prepare the way for deeper study. The chapter shows that students should be supported by a clear explanation of the examination requirements they will face and provides an overview of how the study programme is structured to meet the goals. A starting point is to involve students in a discussion about reading or going to the theatre as a leisure activity in their own language. Pinterest is a useful collection point for images and students can compare different graphical representations. Students should understand how their literature lessons will help them to develop as linguists and how they will be supported to achieve the new challenge.
