ABSTRACT
Nationalism went hand in hand with intellectual and material changes emerging out of natural philosophy. Among intellectuals it was apparent that natural philosophy either led to deism or to materialism. Moreover, it made the promise of unending progress attractive. Moderns had surpassed the ancients.
