ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 adopts neo-Gramscian discourse analysis in order to underscore the relationship between language and hegemony and to show how Japanese policy intellectuals, scholars and other relevant actors have played influential roles in producing and guiding the discourse on the US‒Japan alliance as ‘organic intellectuals’. In exploring the widespread recognition of the US‒Japan alliance, the notion of whether it is ‘common sense’ or not shall be studied within the neo-Gramscian framework. It is crucial to explore the transformation of the discourse regarding the US‒Japan alliance whilst also comprehending the counter-hegemonic discourses.
