Introduction

The introductory chapter lays out the aims of the book and introduces the world of The Walking Dead. It also outlines its combined transdisciplinary and transmedia approach, its focus on particular forms of screen media, and the overall structure of the book. The introduction also explores how the fields of literary studies and media studies have previously been used to interrogate the world-building of The Walking Dead, partly to set out some useful concepts and partly to highlight the need to go beyond these concepts.
