ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a series of questions I have asked hundreds of leaders at keynote addresses I have given in the past few years. I have asked these leaders to respond with a show of hands:

“How many of your organizations have a performance appraisal form?”

(Approximately 95% of leaders have raised their hands to this question)

“Of those of you who have raised your hands, how many of your organizations have the organizational values identified on these forms?”

(Now, the percentage goes down to about 20%)

“Of those who have just raised your hands to this second question, how many of your organizations have a rating scale or some form of assessment in which each employee is evaluated on what they are doing to achieve these values?”

(Now, the percentage goes to a very low 5%)
