ABSTRACT

This final chapter of Why I Don’t Work Here Anymore positions everyday civility (Kusy & Holloway, 2014) as a practice to which all organizations need to aspire. In Chapters 1 and 2, I presented a business case for doing this. In the remaining chapters, I presented the operational cases for how this gets done. Synthesizing business and operational cases into a final chapter brings me to this conclusion. “It takes a village,” so they say, to create a culture where toxic individuals do not get away with bad behavior. In this final chapter, I help leaders understand the steps needed for instilling a culture of everyday civility defined as a norm of respect that is modeled, reinforced, and integrated into the daily culture of the organization (Kusy & Holloway, 2014). What can leaders do to “walk the talk”? How do they integrate everyday civility values into daily conversations? These questions have been addressed in this book through evidence-based practices—demonstrated to show results. With this final chapter, I summarize these practices into a cohesive plan of action.
